Mini pigs need regular hoof trimming to stay comfortable and mobile, especially since most don't wear down their hooves naturally the way pigs in larger, more active environments do. Left untrimmed, overgrown hooves cause an unnatural gait, joint strain, and eventually lameness.
We use the Flip Technique (FTP) method for mini pig hoof trims — gently placing the pig on its back in a calm, controlled hold. This position gives full, clear access to all four hooves at once, keeps the trim fast and low-stress, and avoids the repeated restraint and repositioning that other methods require. Most mini pigs settle quickly once flipped and the trim itself typically takes just a few minutes.
We provide mobile hoof trimming for mini pigs under 350 lbs. This weight limit exists for the safety of both the animal and the handler — the FTP method relies on being able to safely flip and hold the pig, which isn't appropriate or safe for larger animals. Do mini pig hoof trims hurt?
No. A properly performed trim only removes excess hoof material and does not cause pain. Pigs may be startled by the flip and restraint at first, but the trim itself is not painful when done correctly.
What can I expect?
We provide clear communication throughout the process, making the appointment, what we need to do it safely, time we will be there, and answer any questions you may have before, during, and after we are there. Some pigs squeal during their trim, which is perfectly normal, and is an understandable freight for the owners. Did you know that a pig’s squeal can reach 115 decibels, which is as loud as a rock concert, and louder than some aircraft engines? Other pigs rest during their trim, some grunt, some kick, some may try to bite, all of these are normal.
