What animals does Happy Herd Services provide hoof trimming for?
We provide hoof trimming services for goats, sheep, mini pigs (under 300lbs), cows, and alpacas. Whether your animals need correction, or routine maintenance, we are here to make and keep your livestock as healthy and comfortable as possible.
How often should goats’ get a hoof trim?
While hoof growth depends on their environment, feed, genetics, and breed. We recommend goats’ hooves be trimmed every 6-8 weeks.
How often should pigs get a hoof trim?
The “average” mini pig should be getting a hoof trim every 6 months. Some may need a trim every 4 months, others may need it once a year, but most pigs are their healthiest and most comfortable when their hooves are trimmed every 6 months.
How often should cows get their hooves trimmed?
Cows feet should be trimmed 3 times a year for maintenance (dairy and beef cows), show cows are trimmed every 8 weeks, and corrective trims are case by case. If you have a cow with even a slight limp, it is worth having it investigated before they are fully lame. It is best to not wait until you have an emergency, other than some injuries that can’t be prevented. Having their feet trimmed by a professional can prevent problems before they become a problem.
Why is hoof trimming important?
Keeping your animals’ hooves trimmed is an important aspect of being an animal owner, homesteader, farmer. Healthy hooves are the foundation of a healthy animal. Without regular maintenance, hooves can become overgrown, cracked, or misshapen, leading to pain, poor posture, and even long-term damage to joints and tendons. Keeping them trimmed on a schedule helps prevent these problems if trimming is started at a young age, and if started at an older age we can help reverse some damages, and prevent them from getting worse.
